You’re Spending Too Much Money on Developing Film

Film is truly an awesome format to shoot with but there are some important things to consider when you get into shooting film. You buy your first camera and a few rolls of film and go on a trip and capture some awesome shots. You’re probably super excited to get them developed. The anticipation of not knowing what the images will look like is part of the whole experience of shooting film. It’s definitely something I love about shooting with film.

The excitement usually ends when you have to actually pay to get them developed. “Shit! I didn’t think it would be this much money” is something you’re probably saying to yourself. But of course you’re going to pay the market rate because you’ll do whatever it takes to see what those images look like.

I’m here to tell you that you NEED to stop getting your film developed by a lab and learn how to do it yourself. You’re going to thank your bank account in the end.

So lets first break down the cost of having a lab develop your film vs developing by yourself.

Developing 35mm Film in a Lab

  • $12/roll of film
  • $5.95
  • $1.19 tax

Total = $19.14/roll of 35mm film
